Waymo now offers free rides in its self-driving minivans across Phoenix

Having driven nearly three million miles in trials, Google spin-off Waymo is ready to begin real-world tests of its autonomous vehicle tech with members of the public; the company is now offering free rides to people in Phoenix, Arizona who want to participate in its Early Rider program.

If you’re in the city and travel around the Phoenix metropolitan area – including the towns of Chandler, Tempe, Mesa and Gilbert – you can sign up by filling out a form on Waymo’s site. The trio of tech CEO pals hit SPiN in San Francisco, part of Susan Sarandon’s network of ping pong social clubs, last Friday.

Houston, CEO of Dropbox, was celebrating his 34th birthday among friends. Kalanick, CEO of Uber, was coming off a tough few weeks of being in the news for all the wrong reasons. And Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, was about to announce that he and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, were expecting a second child.

Poll reveals fear of travel in self-driving cars

More than three out of four Americans are afraid of the prospect of riding in a self-driving vehicle, a new survey by AAA finds.

The organization said the finding that 78% of those surveyed fear traveling in a self-driving car is unchanged from last year.

But motorists appear eager to try some of the technologies that could go into self-driving cars. The survey showed 59% of drivers want autonomous technologies in their next vehicle.

“Even after we added messaging in the summer of 2009, we kept the basic ‘text only’ status functionality in WhatsApp,” says co-founder Jan Koum in a blog post. “Every year, when Brian (Acton) and I would plan projects to work on, we always talked about improving and evolving this original ‘text only’ status feature.”

Verizon and Yahoo agree $350m price cut

US telecoms giant Verizon has reached a deal with Yahoo to buy the company’s core internet business for $350m (£281m) less than originally agreed.

Doubts had been cast over the original deal after it emerged that Yahoo had been hit by two huge cyber attacks.
